How Pop Culture Can Help You Master Sales Tax Fast!
State taxes don’t have to be boring — pop culture references can turn sales tax compliance into something engaging and surprisingly fun to learn about.
1. Know only what you need to know
If the business doesn’t have sufficient presence in a jurisdiction which is determined by whether nexus thresholds have been met) you typically do not have to worry about collecting that jurisdiction’s sales and use tax.
Please note that if the business makes online sales through a marketplace facilitator, like Amazon, eBay, Etsy, etc. the agreement with the facilitator must be reviewed to establish the business’s sales an use tax responsibilities.
2. Use sales tax software as a tool
The software should be viewed as a tool to help a business become and stay sales and use tax compliant. Software can help a business establish the appropriate sales tax rates, track and implement sales tax law changes, etc. Choose the software that will address your needs and works for you in terms of price, support and ease of use.
3. Keep your records
Records should be retained at least 3-4 years for sales tax purposes. The records that should be retained include sales an use tax return work papers, sales invoices, purchase invoices, general ledger, etc.
4. Seek help when needed
Sales tax is a billion dollar business that is not user friendly. Reach out to experts when you need help. And that is your tip for the week. Have great day everyone.
